The new beginning of the Egyptian cotton textiles industry was by the end of the 1920s, when “Bank Misr (Bank of Egypt)” established “Misr Spinning and Weaving Company” at EL Mahalla EL-Kubra. The mill started with 22000 spindles and 484 weaving looms and was concentrating mainly on course counts.

“Egypt’s textile industry has flourished at all points in the country’s long history, boasting the honorary place of being the sole manufacturer of the Kaba’s kiswa (the cloth that covers Mecca’s crown jewel). However, in the last few decades, the industry lost its central position due to neglect and lack of investment. Since Mohamed Ali Pasha industrialized the textile sector, it has been an engine of growth for the country. Now, the Egyptian Government is taking a page out of the history books in promoting the development of Egypt’s textile industry with the beginning of construction commencing on the world’s largest textile factory in El-Mahalla El-Kubra. Planners and economists hope that with increased mass production with modern machinery capable of wielding Egypt’s long-staple cotton, Egypt will be able to regain its position as a major clothing and fabric manufacturer to the world.” Read More
